What does it take to create a video game, line up rhythms like the best DJs or design a roller coaster that produces the biggest thrills? In Design Zone, guests can go behind the scenes and see how video game developers, music producers, roller coaster designers and other creative problem solvers use math to do the amazing things they do. Design Zone explores mathematical concepts like patterns, variables, scale, slope, and ratios used by artists, architects, engineers, musicians and other innovators.

Divided into three main sections, guests will have the chance to design their own marble maze video game, adjusting the variables to achieve a higher score; create music with the Whack-a-Phone, experimenting with tube length and pitch; design a skate park by manipulating slope and length of ramps, and then test your course with a virtual skater; and more!

Design Zone will open September 17, 2022 - January 2, 2023, and will be included with Science Center admission.

Design Zone was produced and is toured by the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry. This exhibit was made possible by a National Science Foundation (NSF) grant.
