Questions about Membership

How long is a membership valid?
Membership is valid for one full year from the date of purchase or renewal.

What exactly does membership give me free or unlimited admission to?Membership gives you free, unlimited access to our permanent exhibits and Butterfly and Garden Station (open April- October) every day we are open. Free, unlimited admission benefits do not include the Digital Dome Theater or special touring exhibits that require an additional ticket.

When I apply or renew a membership, how long will it take to receive my membership card and passes?
Your Dome passes, guest exhibit passes, and physical membership card(s) will be mailed to you after your purchase/renewal. Please allow 7-10 business days to receive your membership materials. You will also receive an email 24hrs after your membership purchase/renewal for you to download your complimentary digital membership card.

If I want to become a member after my visit to the Museum, can the price of admission be applied to the cost of a new membership?
Yes! You may apply the cost of Museum exhibit admission to a new membership within same day of your visit date. Please bring your original sales receipt to Guest Services and they will be happy to assist you. The cost of Dome tickets and tickets for select touring exhibitions cannot be applied.  

I recently upgraded my membership. Why did my expiration date stay the same?When upgrading, you pay only the difference between your current and new membership level, and your expiration date remains the same. If your renewal date is approaching, you may choose to renew-and-upgrade early, which will extend your expiration date for one full year. Once your upgrade is complete, your upgraded membership benefits will be effective immediately.

What if I want to add a Grandparent or child care provider to my membership?
No problem. Adding additional adults to a membership level is just $15. Maximum amount of additional adults is two per membership level.

As a member, how can I purchase discounted Dome tickets?Members can purchase discounted Dome tickets via phone by calling us at 434.791.5160 or visiting us at Guest Services.

What is an ASTC Museum?
The Danville Science Center is an accredited member of the Association of Science-Technology Centers (ASTC). Museum members receive free or discounted general admission to our network of over 300 member museums all over the world.  Click here or visit www.astc.org/passport for an updated list of all participating museums. Be sure to pack your membership card for your next vacation!

Please contact the museum/science center prior to your visit to confirm admittance requirements which may vary with each location. Please note that any museum within 90 miles of us may not offer member benefits. Danville Science Center is listed under the Science Museum of Virginia.

May I purchase a membership as a gift?
Yes! You can call us at 434.791.5160 ext. 0 to order your gift membership over the telephone or visit us at Guest Services.

May I purchase a membership for my business or employees?
The Danville Science Center welcomes your corporate support. To learn more about corporate benefits contact Moriah Davis, 434.791.5160 ext. 204.

How do I make changes to my membership, such as add or change my family members, my address, my phone, etc?
For your convenience we have two ways to make changes, additions, or updates to your information:

Why didn’t everyone in my family receive a membership card?
In an effort to be more environmentally conscience, our membership cards will only be printed for the primary adults on the membership. Children will not receive membership cards. As long as children are listed on the membership and accompanied by one of the primary adults on the membership, our team members will be able to look them up for easy check in when they visit the Museum.

How do I replace a lost or stolen membership card?
If you downloaded your digital membership card, you will always have it stored on your smartphone’s wallet. You may replace your lost or stolen membership card by emailing us at Dscgs@smv.org or by calling 434.791.5160. Please note: we can look up your membership status using only your photo ID so you are able to visit even if you do not have your membership card handy.

May I receive a refund on my membership dues?
No, all membership purchases are nonrefundable.

Digital Membership Cards
*A digital membership card will be emailed to the primary member’s email provided when purchasing/renewing a membership. 

What are digital membership cards?
Digital membership cards can be downloaded and saved to your smartphone or tablet. Going digital means you never have to worry about forgetting your membership card, in addition to being more environmentally friendly and helping to reduce administrative costs. After joining or renewing your Danville Science Center membership, you will receive an email with a link to download your card. 

Is there a cost to having a digital membership card?
No. Your digital membership card is FREE.

How do I receive my digital membership card?
Once you join or renew your membership, you will receive an email within 24hrs with an attached link. Click on the link to download your digital membership card to your smartphone or tablet.

  • For iPhone users, access the email from your smartphone and click the "Download" button, click "Add to Wallet" then "Add." The card will automatically go to your iPhone’s Apple Wallet. It can be accessed in Apple Wallet at any time.

  • For Android users, you’ll need to download Wallet Passes from the Play Store prior to downloading the card. After you have the app, access the membership email from your smartphone and click “Download”. The card will automatically go to your Wallet Passes app, where it can be accessed at any time.

What will be on my digital membership card?
Your digital membership card will show your name, membership level, expiration date, and member ID. The back of the card will list member benefits and ASTC Passport Program information.

Can I use this digital membership card to visit other ASTC Museums?
Yes. Your digital membership card is just like a physical card. Please show your digital membership card and valid ID at other reciprocal locations for free/discounted general admission. Call before you visit to confirm your Passport Program benefits.

Will I get a new digital card if I renew or upgrade my membership?
No. Your digital membership card will automatically update in your wallet. If you notice that your digital membership card did not update, you can refresh your wallet.

What if I need to update my information on my digital membership card?
Please contact us at Dscgs@smv.org or call us at 434.791.5160 to update your information.

Will I still need to show my photo ID with my digital card?
Yes. We want to ensure that no one else is using your membership benefits.
There are multiple adult names on my membership, how can the second or third person receive the card?

All adult members that are listed on the membership should provide an email address to receive their own digital membership card. If they don’t have an email address on file, the primary member will receive the email with links for each listed adult to download their digital card.

What happens if I downloaded all the digital cards to my smartphone device? How do I share the other cards?
Select the card you want to share. Navigate to the “back of the card” by clicking the small ellipse on the bottom right corner. Look for a “Share Pass” button to send the card to your second or third adult member. After selecting “Share Pass” you will need to select the email or mail option to share their digital card. iPhone and Android users can share the pass via text message if sending to another smartphone. As always, we will request a corresponding photo ID upon entry to ensure that only named members are using your digital card.

Visiting the Museum
Can I visit the Museum before my membership card arrives?
Yes! Simply bring a form of ID to Guest Services and a team member will assist you.

May I give my membership to someone else like my relatives or neighbors?
No. Museum memberships are not transferable and benefits are exclusively for the individuals listed on your membership. You can purchase an additional membership to give as a gift or add additional adults for $15.

Can I use my membership card to bring a school group to the Museum?
No. Membership admission cannot be used for school groups because the school group is not covered by your membership. Only those adults and children named on your membership are permitted. Groups enjoy a discounted admission fee, individual membership passes and other discounts are not valid toward group admission fees.

If I come with a school group that is participating in special demonstrations can I join that group?
No. Paid group demonstrations are not part of a member benefit if you use your membership to check-in separately from the group.

Membership Communication
We have two adults named on our membership, plus an additional named person. Who will receive the official mailings regarding the membership?
The primary named member will receive all print mail from the museum that includes membership renewal letters, quarterly newsletters, emails and invitations.

I recently mailed in my renewal notice with payment, but then received another notice in the mail. Did you receive my payment?
It is likely that your payment and our renewal mailing crossed in the mail. It takes up to two weeks to receive and process a renewal payment by mail. If you sent in your payment, please disregard the second notice.
